Applied Math for IT Majors

Upon successful completion of the class, the student will be able to:

1.      Solve complex mathematical problems involving fractions and decimals.

2.      Develop a capacity to engage in logical thinking.

3.      Develop an awareness of the fundamental principles of mathematics.

4.      Demonstrate a basic understanding of problem-solving approaches used to investigate and understand mathematical concepts.

5.      Given appropriate data (charts, diagrams, maps, etc.), use estimation to determine if a solution is reasonable.

6.      Given appropriate data (charts, diagrams, maps, etc.), use estimation to solve application problems.

7.      Identify a variety of strategies to be used in problem solving.

8.      Recognize and use symbols involved in set notation.

9.      Determine whether or not an element belongs to a given set.

10. Identify the following concepts and/or relations: Universal Set, Null Set, Finite Set, Infinite Set, Element, Equivalence, Equality, Cardinality of Sets.

11. Define a subset.

12. Identify the subsets of a given set.

13. Identify the proper and improper subsets of a given set.

14. Identify and use the following set operations: Union, Intersection, Complement.

15. Draw and use Venn Diagrams to illustrate both joint and disjoint sets.

16. Define a statement.

17. Identify and use simple and compound statements.

18. Write the negation of simple and compound statements.

19. Recognize and use symbols for negation, conjunction, disjunction, conditional and bi-conditional sentences.

20. Construct the five basic truth tables to analyze given statements.

21. Define the conditions of AND, OR, and EXCLUSIVE OR.

22. Use truth tables to depict simple and complex conditions.

23. Convert decimal (Base 10) to binary.

24. Convert decimal (Base 10) to hexadecimal.

25. Convert binary to hexadecimal.

26. Convert binary to decimal.

27. Convert hexadecimal to binary.

28. Convert hexadecimal to decimal.

29. Explain how binary numbers are stored in twos complement.

30. Add and subtract binary numbers.

31. Add and subtract hexadecimal numbers.

32. Count in binary.

33. Count in hexadecimal.

34. Convert to other base numbering systems.

35. Add and subtract negative numbers.

36. Convert word problems into their mathematical solution.

37. Solve equations for one unknown quantity.

38. Define mean, median, and mode.

39. Define and give samples for the different types of sampling.

40. Given raw data, make a frequency distribution.

41. State the purpose for using units of standard deviations.

42. Specify the relationship between the standard deviation and the area of the standard normal distribution.

43. Demonstrate the ability to solve business problems using standardized equations.

44. Understand the relationship between mathematics and computer programming.
