A survey of American government and politics. It includes discussion of the historical foundations and fundamental principles of American democracy, the basic institutions of government, the fundamental rights of citizens and the public policy process.
This course satisfies a general education requirement in the Social Sciences Area.

An introduction to politics, government and public policy at the state and local level, with particular emphasis on the state of Iowa. It includes an analysis of the relationship among federal, state and local governments; the structure and powers of state and local governments; the scope of political participation in state and local parties; and public policymaking by state and local governments.

This course is designed to provide the student with the opportunity to obtain a greater understanding of a topic in political science. The student will go beyond what is covered and expected in other classes in this discipline. The student will plan and complete an Honors project for the course. The specifics of the Honors project will be contracted with the instructor and the Honors Committee at the beginning of the semester.
